Some of my perennials; however, are loving it and they are putting on a show. My Coneflowers and Daisies are blooming like crazy.

A Gerber Daisy that I planted 2 years ago came back again this year - prettier than ever. This was such a surprise! I have always used them in containers and thought of them as annuals, but my neighbor has one she planted in her beds that has come back 4 years in a row so I decided to try it. I think they are one of the most beautiful flowers -- the detail in the petals is amazing.
A friend of mine I and will be going hiking at a nearby waterfall in the next couple of weeks. That is the only hike I will do in this weather - one that rewards me at the end with the mist of a cool waterfall!
Paddling on one of our beautiful Tennessee Rivers is another favorite hot weather activity -- it is so refreshing and rejuvenating to float and play in the cool water.
And, of course, finding a swimming pool is a great way to beat the heat.

How do you stay cool in this "heat dome" most of us are experiencing?
Sending cool thoughts your way....

We share the same love for flowers, each year I'm always humbled when they return....simply amazing.
ReplyDeleteKayaking sounds like fun, especially in the cool waters, this heat and humidity zaps the life out of you doesn't it :)
Enjoy your summer fun.

It is always fascinating to see which ones return each year! I have been enjoying the views of your gardens on your blog! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteIt has been very hot and humid here in northern IL, too. Yesterday we had a brief respite from this weather - it was "only" in the 80's and low humidity. So I actually took a nice morning walk around the neighborhood and was able to do a little bit of yard work. My purple coneflowers are in all their glory right now, too. I have those daisies in pots...hmm, maybe I should try planting them in the ground and see what happens next year? Hiking near a waterfall or jumping in a pool sounds mighty good to me right now!
ReplyDeleteHa! You know you are in the dog days of summer when temps in the 80s feel cool. I envy the lower humidity you are having! You should definitely try a Gerber Daisy in your garden and see what happens.
DeleteI consider this summer to be a wash-out!! We had the 17 year cicadas blanketing all trees and shrubs in my yard for six weeks and now this heat / humidity wave...aside from minimal work outdoors very little goals are being met here :(
ReplyDeleteOh no! The cicadas are the worst! Yes - sounds like a good summer to do indoor things in your neck of the woods!
ReplyDeleteYour coneflowers and gerber daisy are pretty. I have never grown any of the Gerber daisies, but after seeing how pretty yours is, I think next year I will give them a try. It's been hot here, near St. Louis, too. I would welcome a little cool spell right about now.
ReplyDeleteI never had luck with Gerbers in containers so was happy to see it doing well in the garden. They come in so many beautiful colors. I plan to try some more next year. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
DeleteYour flowers are beautiful - I hope you can see them while you are inside with the A/C
ReplyDeleteThank you! I can see coneflowers and daisies from kitchen window and gerber daisy from my sitting room!
DeleteWow, I have never planted a Gerber Daisy in the garden, what a great treat that it came back! It's doubtful it would do the same in my zone, but I'll have to do a little Google search!
ReplyDeleteMine is in a south facing location close to the house so it is pretty sheltered. You probably get much colder temps than we do but they are sold as annuals here so I never thought to try it til I saw my neighbor's coming back.
DeleteWe just moved to our little fixer upper house in central Oregon.. and a neighbor brought us over a wheelbarrow full of gerber daisies from another neighbor's garden! He didn't know what they were and we didn't either, so I looked them up and decided that's what they were. They are white ones. I didn't know you could have colored ones! We broke up the big hunk of them.. had to use an axe!!! and planted clumps of them in the ground in an old unused flower bed.. I mean we must have planted about 20 different chunks of them.. they were just roots in dirt. Boy did they take off and grow. Our entire yard now is full of them and they loved being in the ground and in the two containers I used! I'm sure they are perennials and I've decided they also spread! as there are new leaves on all of them and they are spreading out on both sides.. so I'd better keep them pruned down or they will take over. I love the pink ones and am going to check into putting some pink ones in... (since I do happen to love pink!).
ReplyDeleteWow -- sounds like your daisies are pretty happy! I have some other types of daisies in my garden and just love them cause they are so easy and pretty - even in hot and humid weather! What city in Oregon do you live? My brother is in Bend and I LOVE to visit him there. Have travelled all over the state and it is a pretty amazing place!
DeleteThe daisies have been very hardy... of course I HAVE to get some pink ones! Didn't have enough pink in my garden this year as it's the first one this house has had for 20 years! We did have a few pink gladiolas though which were awesome. I live in Madras which is about 45 miles north of Bend! I love the beauty of Bend and the mountains you can see.. and it's full of fun things to do, but would not want to live there as such a big town and too much traffic! I love going there to have lunch in the Old Mill Dist and sit beside the Deschutes River. We used to live in La Pine which was 30 miles SOUTH of Bend.. but too cold of a climate for us and too much snow. Madras is drier, less now, lower elevation, so we can have flowers longer. It is pretty dry though and I miss the mountains.. but can see all the same mountains that you can see from Bend. All of Oregon is just gorgeous.. so many diverse things to see and places to go. I've lived in Oregon and Washington all my life and there are still places I haven't seen and want to see!
DeleteI'll have to ask my brother if he has been to Madras! He is mountainbiker and is always off trekking around the state. Your climate sounds heavenly to me -- I do NOT like the humidity of the south! I've always felt I my true "home" is out west. But my daughter and granddaughter are here in Nashville so there is no way I will leave -- I'll just take my vacations out that way! It is amazing to me how Oregon can have so many different climates in one state!
DeleteThere are some great roads to mountain bike on here.. but they are "roads" not trails! He may have ridden this area, especially to Lake Billy Chinook. Ask him if he has been there. It's awesome! I know what you mean about you need to live where your child is. My son is 5 hours from me and it's too far for me! I would love to live closer to him.. he lives on the coast of Oregon which I love. Maybe someday? :-)
