I
LOVE "smalls" - those fabulous treasures that are displayed so
temptingly on tables and shelves at antique stores and estate sales. I am a sucker for vintage vases, picture
frames, bowls, pitchers, statuary, etc., etc.
I have so many, in fact, that I can't display them all at one time and
because I love so many different types and colors of things, I have always
created seasonal vignettes, especially in my sitting room and dining area. I usually get the craving to do this at the
beginning of each new season - July for Summer, September for Fall, December
for Winter and March for Spring.
Recently
I was telling the girls at work that I had put out my summer decor and one of
them said "that must be a southern thing". She is from up north and she said she has only seen and heard of
changing out decor with the seasons since she has been in the South. She only does special decorating around the
holidays -- specifically Christmas and Halloween - but even then she is just
adding things to her current space - i.e., Christmas tree, wreath on door,
maybe a centerpiece on table or mantel decor.
Another woman, who grew up out west, said the same thing. The other
women, who were from the south, said they change their decor seasonally and
their mothers did as well.
I
was raised in Tennessee, grew up in Memphis and have lived in Nashville since
1979 so I am definitely a southern girl.
I don't move my furniture around much, but I do love to switch out my
"smalls" to reflect the seasons.
Below are a few pics of some of my vignettes. NOTE - I am not patient enough to "stage" so what you
see is how it is. I only have my iPhone
camera so the pics aren't great so I apologize for that.
I feel most comfortable and at
home with vintage, repurposed, junk chic decor. I adore found objects and I will generally leave them in their
original condition except to maybe add a coat of paint. My sofa has a slipcover and I am a lover of
white wicker.
How
about you? Do you change your
decor/vignettes to reflect the seasons?
Do you think this is a "southern thang"?

I think most home and garden bloggers switch out their accessories and vignettes. At least I do and am in OK. I get bored with it otherwise in a one bedroom apartment.

By the way, looks like we are the same age. 59. Will be 60 next February.

I get bored also and I like an excuse to buy that perfect vintage treasure I happen to find! I will be 60 in May next year!
DeleteI didn't know it was a southern thang. I don't put out as much as I used to because my house is so small that two things in an area usually fills it up. But, I have a lot of two thangs to change out! Haha. I don't move furniture as much as I used to but again because of small space. Well this just made me want to switch things out. Hahaha. Life is for enjoying.
ReplyDeleteI love the pics of your little house! Yes - life is for enjoying no matter HOW you choose to do so!
DeleteI don't think it's a southern thing - I do the same thing and I live in northern IL! Though my mother is from KY and so were her parents. So, maybe it's in the blood? :-) I've just always loved decor (and I love vintage stuff, too) and changing it out, not only depending upon the seasons, but my moods, too.
ReplyDeleteGood point - perhaps it is in the blood. And maybe that is why all of us are drawn to each others' blogs cause we are kindred spirits!
DeleteI live in the south, but I don't really change my decor with the seasons. I guess I have lived too many places to have picked up that trend. Also, I don;t have the storage space anymore in my small apartment. I love your white wicker. Does it really ever go out of style? I am definitely not a slave to trends, so I say go with what you love. Your home looks very cozy. xo Laura
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment, Laura! I have very little storage space also. One way I remedy that is to get rid of something if I buy something new. If I buy a new top, I try to give another one I haven't worn in awhile to charity. Same with my decor items. If I am no longer in love with them I let them move on for someone else to enjoy.
DeleteI live in Wisconsin, and myself, and most friends, switch out decor all year long. I follow many bloggers who are from "up North" and they all switch out. Maybe your co-worker is one of the few who doesn't change out decor no matter where she lives. Some people just don't like to fuss or "putz" with stuff and are happy with keeping things the same most of the time. Thankfully we are all different, but I don't think it is a regional thing at all!! :-) I agree, it is something "in our blood" ~ and we are either born with it or not!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Chris! One of my favorite things about blogging is connecting with people from different areas to see how things are where they live. What I have found out is....there are kindred spirits everywhere! And...it is fun to also celebrate the differences!
DeleteLovely. Love the white wicker chair on the porch the best.
ReplyDeleteGood job!
Thanks! I do love my wicker!
DeleteOh you have lovely displays! :) I am in the North and always decorated seasonally, though once I do so, that's it..as in I don't keep changing it for a new blog post or anything. What they call 'vignettes' nowadays, my grandmother called "settings" and she loved to create very elaborate ones from time to time...most were a mix between outdoor items and faux birds and flowers.
ReplyDeleteThank you Deb! I don't change things for new blog posts either -- I'm not one to "stage" just for a picture - too lazy. :).
ReplyDeleteNope, definitely not a southern thing, but I do think it's somewhat of a 'blogger' thing. At least that's my observations. Not too many people I know change things up quite as much as many bloggers I know.
ReplyDeleteAs for me, I don't do too much seasonal decorating. Never have really. Too lazy, and not enough storage space.

Thanks Doreen -- your comment makes a lot of sense -- I have seen more of that in blogs than with my friends and coworkers.
